Gerald Francis Murphy, MD

Gerald F. Murphy, MD, passed peacefully away on September 17, 2016, surrounded by his loving children. He was born in Butte, Montana in 1923. He graduated from Butte Central High School and attended Carroll College before being sent to serve in WWII. He graduated from the University of Illinois Medical School in 1948 and served in the MASH unit in Korea. In 1955, he married the love of his life, the late Dolores Teresa Murphy. He was a physician for over 60 years in San Francisco, practicing at Mary’s Help Hospital/Seton Medical Center, where he was President of the Medical Staff and served on numerous hospital committees. He was also President of the Catholic Physician Society for many years. He loved his medical practice and treated his patients like family.

Gerald was very proud to be known as an Irish Catholic. He was an active member of St. Stephen’s Church where he attended daily mass and served as a long time Eucharisti­c Minister. He was honored to be a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. “Faith and family” were so important to him. Nothing made him happier than having the entire family together. He was also an avid sports fan, whether it be attending his grandchild­ren’s sporting events or those of his beloved Niners, Giants or Warriors.

Gerald was the beloved father of Mary (Vartan), Margaret (Ed), Dolores (Jack), Gerald (Bea) and Barbara (Patrick). He was the endeared “Pa” to Michaela, Lauren, Ani, Jonathan, Jack, Edward, Ben, Mary Catherine, Erin and Finn. He was predecease­d by brothers John, Dan and Emmett Murphy and parents, Margaret and Jeremiah Murphy from Ireland.

Friends and family may visit Thursday, September 22nd, at 6pm; Vigil Service 7pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, September 23rd at 1 pm. ALL services will be held at St. Stephen’s Church, 601 Eucalyptus Dr., SF. Committal is at Holy Cross Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Gerald F.
