Craig Robinson takes to the South Bay stage

- — Peter Hartlaub

Craig Robinson was a breakout star on “The Office,” beginning his tenure as Darryl Philbin, a small character in the warehouse, before becoming a keyboard-playing, executive-level love interest with the main cast.

He’s also starred in “Hot Tub Time Machine,” “This Is the End” on the big screen, and the short-lived TV show “Mr. Robinson.” But he’s continued working as a stand-up comedian throughout. Expect a blend of comedy with a heavy musical edge during his visit to the San Jose Improv this weekend, Friday-Sunday, Sept. 23-25.

In the meantime, his musical stylings can be sampled on YouTube. We suggest starting with the “Sexy Public Domain Songs” he performed with James Corden on the “The Late Late Show.”

Craig Robinson:

7:30 and 9:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23; 7 and 9:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24; 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25. $30. San Jose Improv, 62 S. Second St., San Jose. http://sanjose.improv.com
