Fly away with ‘Grace’

- — Leba Hertz

For 20 years, choreographer Jo Kreiter and her Flyaway Productions have found the most unusual places for thir site-specific work focused on women. Those places have included a fire escape, a hanging umbrella, a merry-go-round, a university library, a chandelier on fire, a live billboard and 100-foot walls.

The latest is no different. “Grace and Delia Are Gone” will be at the Firehouse at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture, beginning Thursday, Sept. 22. The theme of “Grace,” set to a score by Carla Kihlstedt and Matthias Bossi, deals with violence against women.

“I have devoted my energy to making dances about the experiences of women from a social justice perspective,” said Kreiter. “‘Grace and Delia’ takes inspiration from history both in the form of traditional murder ballads and in the site itself.”

Grace and Delia Are Gone: 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, Sept 22-24; 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25. Through Oct. 2. Firehouse at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture, 2 Marina Boulevard, S.F. $22$30. (415) 345-7575. www.fortmason.org
