Smuin reprises Sept. 11 piece
The most important work in the late Michael Smuin’s career may very well be “Stabat Mater,” a dance dedicated to Sept. 11 that The Chronicle called “one of the most beautiful ballets of the choreographer’s career.”
Smuin Contemporary American Ballet, led by Artistic Director Celia Fushille since 2007, will reprise the dance when it kicks off its Dance Series 01 on Friday, Sept. 23, at the Lesher Center for the Arts. The program also will be at San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts beginning Sept. 29.
“Madness, Rack, and Honey,” a world premiere choreographed by Garrett Ammon and performed to Mozart’s “Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola and Orchestra,” will be part of the program, as well as the West Coast premiere of “Indigo” by Stanton Welch set to Antonio Vivaldi’s Cello Concerto in B Minor and Cello Concerto in G minor.
Smuin: Dance Series 01: 8 p.m. Friday, Sept 23; 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept 24. Lesher Center for the Arts, 1601 Civic Drive (at Locust), Walnut Creek, Sept. 29-Oct 2. Palace of Fine Arts, 3301 Lyon St., S.F. $25-$68. www.smuinballet.org
