Chronicle members pick ‘The Iron Giant’

- — Peter Hartlaub

For this Chronicle members event, Datebook movie critics and editors let readers choose from eight films, including established hits such as “The Sting” and “Singin’ in the Rain.”

They overwhelmingly voted for “The Iron Giant,” the box office failure by director Brad Bird that was barely promoted when it came out in 1999, but has become an animation classic.

Even better, the movie will be shown on an inflatable drive-in-style screen at Children’s Fairyland, the storybook-themed amusement park near Lake Merritt in Oakland. Before the main program, the Jolly Trolly will be running, and new Chronicle East Bay columnist Otis R. Taylor Jr. will be interviewed onstage. Go to the member promotions at www.sf chronicle.com/membership for more information.

“The Iron Giant”: Chronicle members event. Check-in begins 5:30 p.m., screening at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23. Children’s Fairyland, 699 Bellevue Ave., Oakland. www.sfchronicle.com
