Haft’s ‘King Tide’ tests the waters

- — Leba Hertz

Water. Balance. Extremes. In the dance “King Tide,” Nina Haft & Company in collaboration with Eat the Sun Music Ensemble will explore these issues at the Joe Goode Performance Annex.

As part of her inspiration, Haft used the Farmers’ Almanac to check out local tide charts. At each performance, the dance will be based on what Haft says is “the phase and position of the moon and sun at that appointed hour.”

Since the Mission Creek watershed flows underneath the Annex’s building, Haft & Company have put together a video installation with a live overture that maps what the creek does.

Among the dancers are Sarah Chenoweth, Rebecca Johnson, Peiling Kao, Edmer Lazaro, Rogelio Lopez and Frances Sedayao. Gretchen Jude composed the soundscapes, Ian Winters did the video design, Rogelio Lopez the lighting design and Andrew Merrell the costumes.
