Price gets another season from Reds

-

Bryan Price will return as the Cincinnati Reds manager next season, the last-place team announced Friday before playing the Chicago Cubs.

Price — a San Francisco native, Tamalpais High-Mill Valley and Cal alum — and the Reds agreed to a one-year contract with a team option. The entire coaching staff also has been offered contracts for 2017.

“We’ve been talking about (a new contract) since the last homestand,” Price said. “It just took some time working out the terms of the contract. There is a mutual desire to stay connected. For me, it’s an unbelievable opportunity. It is a storied franchise. I have really enjoyed my coaches and my team.”

The Reds are 67-93, 351⁄2 games out of first in the NL Central. They set a franchise record by using 32 pitchers and a major-league record by allowing 255 home runs. The Reds went 32-57 before the All-Star break before improving to 35-36 in the second half.

Price joined the Reds as pitching coach in 2010 and was promoted to manager after the 2013 season to succeed Dusty Baker, helping to oversee a rebuilding effort. A-Rod back: Alex Rodriguez is back on the field for the New York Yankees in his new role as an instructor. A-Rod arrived at the Yankees’ minor-league complex in Tampa to work with prospects taking part in instructional league.

Rodriguez, 41, played his final game with New York on Aug. 12. He signed a contract to work with minor leaguers in the Yankees farm system through 2017. Briefly: Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer and scouting and player development director Jason McLeod agreed to contract extensions through the 2021 season. ... The Cardinals activated Matt Holliday (broken thumb) from the disabled list, and the outfielder could make his final appearance with the team this weekend.
