San Jose State (1-3, 0-0 MWC) at New Mexico (1-2, 0-0)
When: 1 p.m. Saturday Where: Albuquerque Radio: 1590
Story line: Two teams without a win over an FBS opponent meet in Albuquerque in a Mountain West Conference opener. One team will go with its secondstring quarterback, the other team might have to do so. Head coach Bob Davie’s Lobos are coming off a bye. Last year, the Spartans knocked off New Mexico 31-21 in San Jose.
Injuries: San Jose State — Quarterback Kenny Potter (leg) and defensive tackle Bryson Bridges (concussion) are questionable. New Mexico — Quarterback Austin Apodaca (shoulder) and cornerback Jadon Boatwright (turf toe) are out.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
If San Jose State senior QB Potter remains sidelined with a leg injury, can redshirt freshman Josh Love rebound from a rough first start? The Spartans will need Love to improve on his performance (13-for-27, 155 yards, one TD, four interceptions) in a 44-10 loss at Iowa State last Saturday. Love didn’t receive a scholarship until August.
New Mexico will do without senior QB Apodaca, who hurt his shoulder in the Lobos’ 37-28 loss at Rutgers on Sept. 17. Junior Lamar Jordan, who played quite a bit in the previous two seasons, replaces Apodaca. Jordan is more of a runner; he had a 52-yard TD run against the Scarlet Knights. Backing up Jordan is JaJuan Lawson, a sophomore from Casa Grande High-Petaluma.
If the Lobos quickly take a lead, it will be intriguing to see if they can withstand prosperity. They led 14-3 early in the second quarter before falling 32-31 at New Mexico State. They were up 21-0 late in the first quarter before losing at Rutgers.
