NEWS OF THE DAY
From Across the Nation
1 Oil spill: Cleanup continued Saturday at the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in Buchanan, N.Y., where an undetermined amount of oil spilled into a drainage canal leading to the Hudson River. Jerry Nappi, a spokesman for Indian Point owner Entergy, said the oil is not radioactive and none was observed in the river. State environmental officials were notified after an oil sheen was observed in the discharge canal Friday. Nappi said the spill occurred after the cooling system for one of the turbines in a nonnuclear area of the plant malfunctioned.
2 Zika virus: Zika-carrying mosquitoes have been found in a new neighborhood of Miami Beach. The Florida Department of Agriculture said Saturday that it’s the sixth time Zikabearing mosquitoes have been captured in Miami Beach. Zika can cause severe brainrelated birth defects in pregnant women who become infected. The same mosquito species that spreads Zika also transmits dengue fever.
3 Assault accusation: A lawyer in Ferguson, Mo., who is running for a seat in the Missouri House has accused another Democratic candidate of raping her during an August meeting to discuss how they could work together in the upcoming legislative session. Cora Faith Walker, 31, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, which broke the story Saturday, that she was sexually assaulted by Steven Roberts Jr., a former assistant prosecutor, after going to meet him at a St. Louis apartment on the night of Aug. 26. Both candidates are running unopposed. The Post-Dispatch reported there is an active investigation into Walker’s allegations. Roberts’ lawyer, Scott Rosenblum, said the allegations are “unfounded.”
4 Election complaint: The California Fair Political Practices Commission is investigating a complaint that the adult film industry received foreign donations in its fight against a November ballot measure that would require condoms in porn films. The Sacramento Bee reported that the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which has been the prime sponsor behind Proposition 60, filed the complaint with the commission. It alleges that the “No on Proposition 60” committee run by the porn industry accepted $75,000 in foreign contributions from seven shell companies whose controlling entity is Global Personals Ltd., which is based in the United Kingdom. Mike Stabile, the No on 60 spokesman, said the complaint is mistaken.
5 School shooting: A coroner said Saturday that a 6-year-old boy died days after he was critically wounded in a school shooting in South Carolina. Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said Jacob Hall died from injuries suffered in the shooting Wednesday at Townville Elementary School. A bullet struck Jacob in a main artery in his leg, causing him to lose extensive blood. Another student and a first-grade teacher were also wounded when authorities say a 14-year-old boy opened fire on a playground. The teen killed his father before he drove to the school, authorities say. He was charged as a juvenile Friday with murder and three counts of attempted murder.
