Thomas prevails in Hawaii

-

Justin Thomas bounced back at just the right time Sunday to hold off Hideki Matsuyama and win the SBS Tournament of Champions at Kapalua, Hawaii.

Thomas closed with a 4under-par 69 and ended Matsuyama’s bid for a fourth straight victory.

Thomas went from a fiveshot lead to a one-shot lead in just two holes on the back nine. He was still ahead by one on the 17th hole when he ripped an approach from 214 yards to 3 feet. Matsuyama three-putted from 30 feet for bogey, Thomas made his birdie and his lead was back to three.

That allowed him a comfortable walk with a spectacular view of the Pacific down the 18th at Kapalua.

In his past six events worldwide, Matsuyama has four victories and two second places — both to Thomas. Skiing: Not even a broken gate rolling down the course could stop Olympic slalom champion Mikaela Shiffrin from returning to the top of the podium in her favorite discipline.

The American won a women’s World Cup race Sunday in Maribor, Slovenia, five days after she had failed to finish a slalom run for the first time in four years.

It was the American’s 27th career win, which puts her level with Phil Mahre in third place among American skiers for most World Cup wins, behind Bode Miller (33) and Lindsey Vonn (76).

Henrik Kristoffersen routed his rivals in a foggy men’s World Cup slalom to win by a massive 1.83-second margin in Adel-Boden, Switzerland. With his third slalom win of the season, the 22-year-old Norwegian drew level atop the season standings with Austria’s Marcel Hirscher, who was 2.19 back in third place. Baseball: Former majorleague outfielder Manny Ramirez has agreed to terms with the Kochi Fighting Dogs of Japan’s independent Shikoku Island League. Ramirez, 44, last played in the majors in 2011. Soccer: Lionel Messi saved Barcelona from its second straight defeat by converting a 90th-minute free kick in a 1-1 draw at Villarreal in the Spanish league. Madrid has a fourpoint lead over second-place Sevilla and a five-point advantage over Barcelona.
