Jags retain coach, rehire Coughlin
The Jacksonville Jaguars have hired Doug Marrone as head coach and brought back Tom Coughlin in an executive role, according to a source. Marrone also interviewed with the 49ers and Rams.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the hiring. ESPN first reported Marrone had been chosen to replace Gus Bradley, fired in late November after going 14-48 in three-plus seasons.
Coughlin, who was Jacksonville’s first head coach and won two Super Bowls in 12 seasons with the New York Giants, will serve as executive vice president of football operations.
Marrone served as Jacksonville’s interim head coach for the final two games. He went 15-17 as the Bills’ coach in 2013-14. Steelers’ assistant suspended: Pittsburgh placed an assistant coach on leave following his arrest hours after the team’s playoff victory over Miami on Sunday. Outside linebackers coach Joey Porter was charged with assaulting a doorman at a bar and a police officer who intervened.
According to a criminal complaint, Officer Paul Abel was working security at another nearby bar when he was told by an off-duty officer that the doorman at the Flats on Carson Street was being threatened. Moore hit reviewed: The NFL and NFL Players Association have begun a review of the concussion protocol conducted on Miami quarterback Matt Moore when he left his team’s game at Pittsburgh after being shaken up.
The review doesn’t mean the NFL has drawn conclusions as to whether the protocol was followed, the league said in a statement.
Moore was hurt when hit as he threw a pass Sunday, and the play drew a roughing-the-passer penalty on Pittsburgh’s Bud Dupree. Moore returned to the game after one play.
Packers’ receiver rehabbing: Receiver Jordy Nelson will sit out Green Bay’s practice at midweek to rehab his rib injury.
Head coach Mike McCarthy said Nelson could play in the Packers’ divisional-round game against Dallas if he can practice Saturday. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Nelson had two broken ribs.
Nelson left in the second quarter of the 38-13 win over the Giants on Sunday. He took a shot to the left side from Leon Hall’s helmet.
Colts add CFL player: Indianapolis signed Canadian League star Alex Bazzie to a reserve-future contract. The 6-foot-2, 240-pound outside linebacker had 29 sacks and 83 tackles in 50 games with the BC Lions. Last season, Bazzie had 11 sacks in 18 games and was a West Division All-Star.
