Marion Gleitzman Bacciocco

-

5/20/1924 – 12/27/2016

Marion was born in Berlin, Germany to the late Max and Lina Gleitzman. The Gleitzman’s apartment was so close to the Kaiser’s palace they could see Hitler’s speeches from their balcony. In 1939, they sailed to San Francisco to begin a new life in America. Her parents worked long hours to keep the family afloat. At 14, Marion took care of her brother, did bookkeeping for the family business on Sundays and still got excellent grades. At 15, she also began working at The Emporium to save for college. She worked her way through college and received a B.S. in bio-chemistry from UC Berkeley during World War II. After graduating, she went to work for a hospital laboratory in San Francisco, beginning the career for which she had planned. She married Kenneth Bacciocco in 1949 but they eventually divorced approximately 20 years later. Marion joined the family business in the mid-1950s, discovered she loved the work & remained there until it closed in 1987. A big travel enthusiast, she took a course in tourism and after retirement, she became a hostess on one of the cruise lines. This was the greatest joy of her life – visiting other countries and cultures around the globe. She belonged to Temple Emanu-El in San Francisco. She and her brother Werner remained very close and they lived together for the past decade in Daly City, CA. Marion missed him terribly after his death in December 2015; she died exactly one year later. Marion will be greatly missed by many dear cousins and beloved friends who will always remember her joie de vivre, her razor-sharp mind and wit and her indomitable spirit. Many thanks to Hospice By-the-Bay and Roxana Family Home Care for their amazing care toward the end of her life. A private Celebration of Life Service will be held in February. Donations in her memory can be made to any of her favorite charities: Planned Parenthood, the National Wildlife Federation, Habitat for Humanity, any Jewish organization, American Cancer Society, Paralyzed Vets, Hospice Support or Parkinson’s Disease.
