Werner Einstadter, 87, of Walnut Creek, CA, passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2017 after a brief illness.Werner was born in Nuremberg, Germany, the only child of Albertina(nee Peetz) and Ernst Einstadter. He came to the United States by himself at age 11, in 1940, as his parents were unable to obtain sponsorshi­p to immigrate themselves. After arriving in New York he was put on a train for San Francisco where his Aunt and cousin were living. When he arrived in San Francisco his relatives were unable to take him in and he was placed with a foster family, Abe and Dorothy Jaffe and their son, Sam. Werner went to school graduating from George Washington High School in 1947 and then to UC-Berkeley for his Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate.

Werner worked as a Probation Officer for San Francisco County, several positions at the California Department of Correction­s (San Quentin and Vacaville); as Parole Office in Oakland. After completing his Doctor of Criminolog­y in 1966, he moved his family to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he taught for 25 years at Eastern Michigan University, Department of Sociology, Anthropolo­gy and Criminolog­y, retiring in 1992 and moving back to California.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Constance(Connie), daughter Laura(Bernard OReilly), daughter Ellen(Polley), son Douglas, Granddaugh­ter Deven(David Hoover) and two great grand sons(Isaac and Ethan Hoover).

A Memorial Celebratio­n of Life is planned for April 29,2017.
