Streit scores winner in 1st game with Pens
Mark Streit was dealt from Philadelphia to Tampa Bay to Pittsburgh in the span of a few hours Wednesday.
If his head was swimming, it hardly showed. The defenseman made a quick impression with the Penguins, scoring the go-ahead goal in the third period Friday night as host Pittsburgh defeated the Lightning 5-2.
“Pretty crazy,” said Streit, who also had an assist. “I never experienced it, the quick turnaround and the travel. The staff, the coaching staff and the players have all been tremendous, helped me out big time. I felt comfortable right away.”
Streit darted from the point to the front of the Tampa Bay net and was in perfect position to send Sidney Crosby’s cross-ice feed past new Lightning goalie Peter Budaj 2:38 into the third period to give Pittsburgh the lead for good. Blackhawks 2, Islanders 1: Artemi Panarin scored with 1:14 left in regulation and then had the clinching goal in the shootout for host Chicago, which recorded its sixth consecutive win. Corey Crawford made 31 saves in his first start since Feb. 23. New York’s Thomas Greiss was nearing his fourth shutout of the season when Panarin drove a one-timer by him for his first goal since Feb. 10.
Flames 3, Red Wings 2: Mikael Backlund scored at 3:56 of overtime as host Calgary bounced back from giving up a tying goal by Detroit’s Tomas Tatar with 1.8 seconds left in the third period. Ducks 5, Maple Leafs 2: Rickard Rakell scored twice, Jonathan Bernier made 37 saves, and host Anaheim returned from its bye week with a win. Patrick Eaves had an empty-net goal with 1:14 remaining for his first score since being acquired from Dallas.
Jets 3, Blues 0: Connor Hellebuyck stopped 29 shots for his fourth shutout of the season, and Blake Wheeler scored twice for host Winnipeg. The loss was St. Louis’ fifth in a row. Coyotes 4, Hurricanes 3: Jordan Martinook scored midway through the third period to help visiting Arizona snap a five-game skid. Shane Doan added a power-play, empty-net goal with 58 seconds left and had two assists.
