Green dies; led Phillies to title in ’80
Dallas Green, the tough-talking manager who guided the Phillies to their first World Series championship in 1980, died Wednesday at 82 at a hospital in Philadelphia.
He had been in poor health for several years.
Mr. Green spent 62 years in baseball as a player, manager, general manager — most notably with the Cubs — team president and other roles.
In 1980, with Pete Rose playing first base on a team that included future Hall of Famers Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton, Mr. Green guided the Phillies to an elusive crown, ending a drought that stretched back nearly a century.
Golf: Defending champion Jason Day lasted only six holes at the Dell Technologies Match Play in Austin, Texas, before a heavy heart forced him to concede his match to Pat Perez (see Names & Faces, B2).
Dustin Johnson had no trouble in his debut as the No. 1 seed in a 5-and-3 victory over Webb Simpson. Rory McIlroy, the No. 2 seed, lost when Soren Kjeldsen finished with four straight birdies, and Hideto Tanihara never trailed in a 4-and-2 victory over Jordan Spieth.
NHL: Rickard Rakell scored the go-ahead goal and Anaheim passed Edmonton for second place in the Pacific Division with a 4-3 win over the Oilers. Connor McDavid had a goal and an assist for visiting Edmonton, giving him 84 points to extend his league lead.
William Nylander and Leo Komarov each had a goal and an assist and the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2 . ... At Madison Square Garden, Andrew Ladd scored the tie-breaking goal with about 71⁄2 minutes remaining and the New York Islanders rallied for 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers to pull two points behind Boston for the Eastern Conference’s second wild-card spot.
College basketball: Cal State Bakersfield became the first No. 8 seed to advance to the final four of the NIT, defeating host Texas Arlington 80-76. The Roadrunners (25-9), who beat top-seeded Cal in the first round, will face Georgia Tech at Madison Square Garden Tuesday . ... Central Florida will also be heading to New York after beating visiting Illinois 68-58 to advance to face TCU.
