Vin Scully

The Library of Congress announced that it will preserve the retired Dodgers announcer’s call of a 1957 game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds, the final time they played at the hallowed old stadium. Both teams moved to California after that season. “It was so meaningful to me. I’m not sure what it really means to baseball fans anymore,” said Scully, who added that he grew up going to games at the Polo Grounds, cheering for the Giants and dreaming of watching from the press box. “The sands of time have washed over the Polo Grounds. But for me, it was one of the more memorable games I was ever involved in.” During that broadcast, Scully implored the players to take their time before their franchises left town: “Let’s take it easy, we just want to take one last lingering look at both of you.” The Library of Congress called it “a masterful example of the artistry that great sports announcers bring to their work, as well as their empathy for players and fans.”

Cristiano Ronaldo

The Real Madrid striker now has an international airport named after him — and it is adorned with a odd-looking bronze bust. Dozens of guests and hundreds of fans joined him in his native Madeira Islands for an official ceremony outside the terminal entrance renaming the local airport as Aeroporto Cristiano Ronaldo. “You know how proud I am of my roots, my homeland,” Ronaldo said. But it was the bust of Ronaldo, by local sculptor Emanuel Santos, that attracted attention because it hardly does the handsome footballer justice. The bronze bust squashes the player’s eyes close together, and the cheeky raised-eyebrow smile more resembles a leer. The face is also unusually chubby, in contrast to Ronaldo’s chiseled looks. Ronaldo didn’t seem to be bothered by the look of the bust, but the weird-looking statue quickly went viral on social media.
