Quakes fall at Yankee Stadium

-

Jack Harrison scored in the first half, Thomas McNamara scored four minutes after entering as a second-half substitute and New York City FC beat the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 on Saturday at Yankee Stadium.

Marco Urena scored his first goal for San Jose (2-2-0) in the sixth minute. He forced a rushed clearance by goalkeeper Sean Johnson, won the loose ball and scored from a tough angle at the corner of the sixyard box.

“There was a lot of back and forth today. Lots of goal-mouth action, as we expected today on this small field,” Quakes coach Dominic Kinnear said. “Great start by us. And obviously we would have liked to have held on to the ball a little better and put some more pressure on them, but they came out and took advantage of a good chance.”

New York City (2-1-1) tied it at 1-1 in the 10th minute. Harrison ran to David Villa’s backheel pass and powered a shot off goalkeeper David Bingham’s hands. McNamara made it 2-1 after a nice combination play. Ronald Matarrita ran past the defense to Villa’s flick and found a trailing McNamara.

NYCFC had a man advantage at the 80-minute mark after Víctor Bernardez was given a straight red card for a late studs-up challenge. Johnson pushed away Nick Lima’s close-range attempt in the 74th minute.

England: Maybe it won’t be a procession to the English Premier League trophy for Chelsea after all. The leader’s 2-1 loss at home to relegation-threatened Crystal Palace on Saturday provided an unexpected twist to a title race that most observers thought was virtually over, with Chelsea holding a 10-point lead and in seemingly unstoppable form. Chelsea’s advantage is down to seven after second-place Tottenham, behind second-half goals from Eric Dier and substitute Heung-min Son, beat Burnley 2-0 for a fourth straight victory. Also, Liverpool moved above Manchester City into third place with a 3-1 win over Everton sparked by Brazil playmaker Philippe Coutinho, who scored one goal after a weaving run and also set up substitute Divock Origi for the clinching third. Liverpool hired a private jet to get Coutinho back from international duty in good time for the match, and it proved to be a worthwhile investment. Manchester United played to a scoreless draw with West Bromwich Albion.
