Bill passed away peacefully at The Tamalpais retirement community in Greenbrae, CA, at the age of 92. Born in Milwaukee, WS, to Mary and Arthur Crump, the family moved to Burlingame, CA, when he was five years old.

After graduating from Burlingame High School in 1942, Bill qualified for the 10th Mountain Division Ski Troops. After rigorous training in Camp Hale, CO, the division was dispatched to Italy, where they fought courageously, and Bill earned two Bronze Star Medals. A Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster was awarded for his leadership in guiding the company supply mule train through heavily mined areas while braving enemy fire. He enabled the continuance of the allied offensive with his actions. He received the second star for bravery during the Ski Troops’ spectacular mountain climb of Italy’s Riva Ridge.

After the war, Bill attended Stanford University, majoring in political science. Upon graduation, he was trained in Washington, D.C., as a Diplomatic Courier, which led to five years of service around the world for the U.S. State Department.

After years of near-constant travel, Bill decided to settle in San Francisco, CA, and start a career in marketing. After losing sight in one eye, he then opted for early retirement, became an artist, and joined the Indian Valley Artists Association. His paintings have been shown and sold in the Bay Area and wine country.

With Bill’s charismatic personality and keen sense of humor, he will be remembered fondly by all. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ann Ehmann Crump, son Dr. Stephen Collins Crump (Lisa,) and grandson, Charles Dietrich Crump.

Donations may be made in Bill’s name to California Pacific Medical Center Foundation, 2015 Steiner Street, San Francisco, CA 94115 or a charity of choice.
