Suspect arrested in Dortmund team bus bombing

-

A 28-year-old German-Russian citizen was arrested Friday in Germany on suspicion of bombing the bus carrying the Borussia Dortmund soccer team in an attack last week that prosecutors alleged was motivated by financial greed.

A Dortmund player and a policeman were injured in the triple blasts last week as the bus was heading to the team’s stadium for a Champions League match against AS Monaco. Investigators found notes at the scene claiming responsibility in the name of Islamic extremists, but quickly doubted their authenticity.

Federal prosecutors said the suspect, identified only as Sergej W. in keeping with German privacy law, was arrested by a police tactical response team in the Tuebingen area early Friday.

The man faces charges of attempted murder, causing an explosion and serious bodily harm.

Prosecutors said they planned to make a statement later Friday, but revealed that the suspect had bought a large number of so-called put options for shares of Borussia Dortmund. These would have entitled him to sell the 15,000 shares at a predetermined price, which could have resulted in a substantial profit if their value had fallen in the meantime, prosecutors said.

Rashford leads Man U: Teenage striker Marcus Rashford enhanced his reputation by stepping up in the absence of the injured Zlatan Ibrahimovic to steer Manchester United into the Europa League semifinals with an extra-time winner against visiting Anderlecht.

Showing coolness beyond his years, Rashford deceived two defenders in the penalty area and slotted home a shot in the 107th minute to give United a 2-1 win at Old Trafford.

United advanced 3-2 on aggregate to join Lyon, Ajax and Celta Vigo in the last four, after a tension-filled night of quarterfinal second legs in Europe’s second-tier club competition.

The Europa League was the competition in which Rashford made his senior breakthrough last season, scoring twice in his debut against FC Midtjylland as an 18-year-old unknown. He’s now an England international and one of the hottest prospects in European soccer.

Rashford may have to take on the mantle of being United’s chief striker for the last month of the season after Ibrahimovic hobbled off in the final minutes of normal time after hyperextending his right knee.

In the other quarterfinal second legs, Lyon advanced 7-6 on penalties after Turkey’s Besiktas won the second leg for a 3-3 draw on aggregate; Ajax Amsterdam advanced 4-3 on aggregate in extra time as Germany’s Schalke, needing at least four goals, won the second leg 3-2; and Spain’s Celta Vigo got the 1-1 draw it needed to advance over Belgium’s Genk on a 4-3 aggregate.
