Indiana bans those with sex-crime past

-

Indiana University no longer will admit student-athletes with a history of sexual or domestic violence.

The Indianapolis Star reports the athletics-department policy was approved this month. It bans prospective student-athletes from athletics-related financial aid, practice and competition if they have been “convicted of or pleaded guilty or no contest to a felony involving sexual violence.” That includes transfer students and incoming freshman.

The policy defines sexual violence as “dating violence, domestic violence, rape, sexual assault or sexual violence as defined by the Indiana University policy on sexual misconduct.”

Santa Clara men’s basketball coach Herb Sendek hired Justin Gainey, one of Sendek’s former players at North Carolina State, as an assistant coach. Obituaries: Tom Fleming, 65, a two-time winner of the New York City Marathon and twice a runner-up at the Boston Marathon, died Wednesday of an apparent heart attack while coaching a middle-school team at a meet in Verona, N.J.

Germaine Mason, 34, died Thursday in a motorcycle crash in his native Jamaica.

Mr. Mason, who won a silver medal in the high jump for Britain in the 2008 Olympics, apparently lost control of his Honda motorcycle before dawn in St. Andrew Parish, police said.
