Messi gets 500th goal; Barcelona beats Madrid

-

Lionel Messi scored his 500th career goal to give visiting Barcelona a dramatic 3-2 win over 10-man Real Madrid in the last minute of the “clasico” Sunday, leaving the Spanish league title race wide open.

Messi netted his milestone goal — his second of the night and 47th of the season — with a low left-footed shot from inside the area two minutes into stoppage time.

“He is the best player in history,” Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said. “He makes the difference.”

The two rivals are tied at 75 points atop La Liga. England: Pep Guardiola’s first season in English soccer with Manchester City will end without a trophy after Alexis Sanchez’s extratime goal earned Arsenal a 2-1 victory in the FA Cup semifinals at Wembley Stadium.

While Arsenal can look forward to an FA Cup final against Chelsea next month, City’s unraveling season will now be defined by finishing in the top four of the English Premier League, which would qualify it for next season’s Champions League. City is in fourth place, but just one point ahead of Manchester United, which beat Burnley 2-0.

City and United meet Thursday. Both were helped by third-place Liverpool losing 2-1 at home to Crystal Palace, leaving the three teams separated by three points.

Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante was voted the EPL’s player of the year. France: Radamel Falcao and Kylian Mbappe scored to help Monaco beat host Lyon 2-1 and reclaim the top spot in the French league. Monaco moves above defending champion Paris Saint-Germain on goal difference. Germany: Leipzig missed the chance to move closer to Bundesliga leader Bayern Munich as it drew 1-1 at Schalke. Leipzig could have cut the gap to six points with a win, but now trails Bayern by eight. MLS: Clint Dempsey had a goal and an assist and the defending champion Seattle Sounders beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 3-0 to snap a six-game road winless streak.

Dempsey gave the Sounders (2-2-3) a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute after heading home Nicolas Lodeiro’s cross. Former Stanford forward Jordan Morris made it 3-0 in the 44th, with Dempsey assisting. The Galaxy (2-5-0) have lost two straight.

Cyle Larin scored two goals to help Orlando City beat New York City FC 2-1 to move atop the Eastern Conference standings.

Miguel Ibarra scored in the 72nd minute to give the host Minnesota United a 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids.
