Report: Peppers tested positive

-

Jabrill Peppers’ first-round draft projection has seemed shaky much of the month.

It would seem to be in a tougher spot now.

ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter reported Monday that Peppers tested positive for a dilute sample at the NFL scouting combine in early March.

A diluted sample means Peppers provided a urine sample that was too watered down.

The NFL treats diluted samples as positive tests, which means Peppers will enter the NFL in Stage 1 of the league’s intervention program. As such, he’ll be subject to further random drug testing plus fines and suspensions for future positive tests.

Peppers’ agency, Creative Artists Agency, said Peppers was sick at the combine and has a history of cramping, so he “was being pumped with fluids . ... He never failed a drug test in his life, nor tested positive before for any substance.”

Peppers is the second prospect to face a dilute sample this year, joining former Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster, who said on Thursday that his combine sample was reported as diluted.

Long retires: Jake Long, the first overall pick in the 2008 draft and a four-time Pro Bowl left tackle for the Dolphins, has decided to retire after a torn Achilles tendon ended his ninth NFL season early with the Vikings.

Long announced on his Twitter account that a lack of progress on his latest rehabilitation has outweighed his desire to continue playing. He appeared in four games with the Vikings last year before getting hurt.

Long performed as advertised for Miami after a standout college career at Michigan, but he ultimately was waylaid by serious injuries.

Long tore an ACL in both 2013 and 2014 with the Rams, and he played sparingly for the Falcons in 2015.

Briefly: Seattle general manager John Schneider said a trade involving cornerback Richard Sherman is unlikely and that any offer at this point would have to go beyond anything the team has heard so far . ... Odell Beckham Jr. will be with the New York Giants through at least the 2018 season. The team will pick up the fifth-year option on the star receiver before the deadline to do so next week, NFL Network reported . ... Linebacker Will Compton, a restricted free agent, has re-signed with Washington. Last season, he had a career-best 104 tackles. ... Kansas City waived Jaye Howard with a failed physical designation after the defensive tackle was limited to eight games by a hip injury last season.
