Emma Sabbatini died quietly Wednesday evening April 19, 2017 at her home in San Mateo, surrounded by family and caregivers. Emma was born June 16, 1916 in San Mateo when the city population was 5,000. She was the daughter of Maria Luigia and Costantino Marchesin who had emigrated from Pianzano, Italy, north of Venice. Throughout her life, Emma kept in close touch with cousins in Italy.

Emma was known for her exceptiona­l cooking and baking as well as her fierce attachment to family and a vast network of friends. She was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church and the Italian Catholic Federation. For many years she enjoyed the company of women friends at their sewing club.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Abramo, her brother Enrico Marchesin, and her brother John Marchesin. She is survived by sons Julian and Robert, daughtersi­n-law Valerie and Bonnie, grandsons Christophe­r (and wife Janina), Peter, and Scott, sisters-in-law Norma Marchesin and Angela Marchesin, and nieces Adriana and Luciana in Rome.

Visitation Service begins at 6pm followed by a Rosary at 7pm on Friday, April 28, 2017 at Sneider & Sullivan & O’Connell’s Funeral Home, 977 S. El Camino Real, San Mateo, CA. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1pm on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 1 Notre Dame Ave., San Mateo, CA. Interment will held at 11am on Sunday, April 30, 2017 at Skylawn Memorial Park, Hwy 92 at Skyline Blvd., San Mateo, CA.

Donations in her memory may be sent to St. Matthew Catholic School or St. Anthony Foundation in San Francisco.
