Maureen McGuigan Brown

3/17/1931 – 3/28/2017

-

Maureen was born in Philadelphia in 1931, the oldest of four children of two Scottish immigrants. Her parents returned to Scotland in 1933, where Maureen attended primary and secondary school and worked until she moved to New York at age 28. In NYC, she attended Pace College, graduated with a BS in Business and Accounting, and worked as an accountant on Wall Street, where she met her future husband Warren Brown.

Maureen and Warren were married in 1970 and relocated to San Francisco, where Warren was a safety engineer and Maureen an accountant for Touche Ross and several other notable companies. Maureen and Warren lived in Oakland for the duration of their marriage, surviving the Oakland Fire of 1991. They were season ticket holders of the San Francisco Opera where they shared their love of music and opera.

Maureen and Warren had both retired by 1990, and they spent the next 18 years travelling the world and spoiling their dogs. When Warren passed away in 2008, Maureen’s travel lust became more muted, and she spent more time with close friends and her dogs.

Even though Maureen lived far from Scotland and England, she remained extremely close to her brothers, their significant others and children. She visited them often and her nieces and nephews fondly remember the thrill of receiving her $10 gift to each, every single Christmas. During the last years of her life, Maureen returned to live in Cambridgeshire England with her brother Brian and caregiver, Antonia Savvidou.

Maureen was a kind, open minded and trusting person, with a charming and devilish wit. Never known to refuse a cup of tea and a cookie, she remained delightful company to her last breath.

Maureen is survived by her brother Brian and his five children William, Mark, Tracey, Marion, and Douglas; Tommy’s children Gerard, Stephen, and Leslie and his surviving spouse Myra; William’s children Alison, Edmund, Paul, and Liam and his companion Sue Porter; cousin Khadijah (Clare) Knight; and many loving friends, including Cleo Protopapas, Agustin and Diana Lopez, Paradee D’Aquisto, and John Suttle.

There will be a memorial service for Maureen from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 30, at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, California.
