Sister Corinne Avila, PBVM, (baptismal name Mary; religious name Sister Mary Sacred Heart) entered eternal life on April 19, 2017 at the Presentati­on Motherhous­e in San Francisco. A native of Hanford, California, Sister Corinne was born in 1923, and was a Sister of the Presentati­on for almost 73 years (entrance date: July 8, 1944). She leaves devoted brothers Paul (Angie) and James (Liz) Avila, sisters Lena Verdegaal and Josephine (Charles) Sweet, in addition to nieces, nephews, their families, as well as her loving Presentati­on Sisters and Associates. Sister Corinne was predecease­d by her parents Louise Perry and Joe Avila and siblings Ida Madruga, Louise Simas, Theresa Fagundes, Delores Garoogian, Lucy Leal, Bernadette Bricco, Brother Joe Avila, SJ, Fernando Avila, Edward Avila, George Avila and Tommy Avila.

Sister Corinne earned her B.A. degree from the University of San Francisco. As a teacher, Sister Corinne taught first grade for thirtythre­e years at Catholic Elementary Schools including St. Anthony School, Pecos, NM, St. Teresa School, San Francisco, St. Columba School, Oakland, St. John Baptist School, San Lorenzo, Our Lady of Lourdes School, East Los Angeles, and St. Joseph School, Berkeley. After retiring from full-time teaching, she worked as a teacher’s aide for fourteen years at Nativity School in Menlo Park.

Sister Corinne moved to the Presentati­on Motherhous­e in 2004 and since that time had been engaged in various volunteer ministries there and the ministry of prayer.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on May 3, 2017 at the Presentati­on Motherhous­e, 2340 Turk Boulevard, San Francisco, followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma.
