Large hotels — such as the historic Lutetia, which is scheduled to later this year after an epic three-year renovation — chains and Airbnb rentals abound in Paris, but smaller boutique hotels offer a more intimate setting that is popular with visitors and Parisians alike.
Hotel Bachaumont: 18 Rue Bachaumont is a polished 49-room establishment renovated in 2015 on a oneblock street between rues Montorgueil and Montmartre, both bustling with shops, specialty food stores, restaurants and nightlife. Edgar: 31 Rue d’Alexandrie, in La Place du Caire (Cairo Square), is a storybook hotel with 13 rooms (“We say only 12; bad luck,’’ explains manager Harris Sheikh) each designed by prominent artists. One room, “The Dream,” is meant to evoke childhood fantasies and features a wall with handwritten notes from guests, including a haunting few sentences from the weekend of the 2015 terrorist attacks. The Edgar’s website offers a saucy tour of the rooms, and it’s worth checking out even if you’re not planning on staying there. Rooms range from 160 to 225 square feet. From 150 euros. Hotel Providence: 90 Rue René Boulanger is vintage 1854 with a recent extensive updates. The remodel includes chic wall treatments, cocktail bars and period details. The hotel’s website includes a gallery that depicts the fun restorations. The 18 rooms, including a penthouse, range from 140 to 485 square feet. From 162 euros.
