Piedmont estate showcases grand architecture

- By Jordan Guinn

There’s a historic estate available in Piedmont with more than 7,000 square feet of living space. But don’t let its scale fool you, the house readily accommodates a close-knit family.

“It’s both a grand house for entertaining and a flexible, adaptable home,” said Debi Fitzgerrell of Pacific Union Real Estate, who is co-listing 15 Muir Ave. with Anna Bahnson for $4.375 million.

Erected in 1916, the home has all the grandeur synonymous with pre-Great Depression architecture — chandeliers, columns and voluminous public rooms. The property stretches roughly a third of an acre and the home looks up at the rear garden from the lower level.

Six bedrooms and four bathrooms are upstairs, and can easily configure any number of ways. Sunlight pours through the office’s abundant glass, and the attic awaits the creative touch of its next owner.

“It could be a man cave for the ages; a perfect area for a rambling, model-train train layout; a studio with a big loom; an epic doll house; or a large home theater — and you still wouldn’t touch the huge storage spaces up there,” she said.

Of course, a street named after California’s quintessential outdoorsman bears some enticing grounds. Muir Avenue in Piedmont, named for conservationist John Muir, offers a listing with verdant gardens and towering mature trees.

Sited on a double lot, the terraced landscape includes a large brick patio with a built-in barbecue, smoker and an outdoor fireplace. Meanwhile, another patio with a water fountain and vegetable garden awaits just a few steps away.

“The privacy and seclusion here are astonishing,” Fitzgerrell said. “The two patios can easily accommodate 100 guests with no problem, yet there’s several intimate spots where you can lounge in perfect privacy.

True to California tradition, the floor plan easily flows between indoors and out.

“Not only is this back garden lovely, it’s accessible, and that means you’ll use it,” she said.

The master suite spans the width of the home and includes both a fireplace and a separate sunroom with bay views. Windows offer outlooks on three sides and the marbled bathroom includes dual vanities, a Jacuzzi tub and a walk-in shower.
