NEWS OF THE DAY
From Across the Nation
1 Serial slayings: A man was arrested Monday in a string of nine killings that rattled a Phoenix neighborhood last year. Aaron Juan Saucedo, 23, faces counts of homicide and aggravated assault, said Police Chief Jeri Williams. Most of the killings took place in a predominantly Latino neighborhood between August 2015 and July 2016. The shooter stalked victims after dark, picking victims who were outside of their homes or sitting in cars. Saucedo had been arrested last month in connection with a 2015 fatal shooting. Authorities then connected him to the serial killing case.
2 Chicago violence: Ten people were shot — two fatally — after suspected gang members opened fire on a group attending a memorial for another man killed earlier Sunday, police said. Officers believe the attack in the Brighton Park neighborhood was gang retaliation for the fatal shooting of another member earlier in the day. The eight injured were hospitalized. Chicago has been plagued by gang-related violence that has led to a sharp rise in homicides.
3 Officer shot: A police officer was shot during a traffic stop in Buffalo, N.Y., and the gunman was killed by another officer, authorities said. The wounded officer had pulled over a motorist Sunday night when the driver began struggling with him and shot him, striking the officer’s ear. The suspect was shot by a second officer and was later pronounced dead at a hospital. The wounded officer underwent surgery and was in fair condition Monday, police said.
4 Fatal punch: Police in Las Vegas have arrested a 27-year-old man they suspect of striking and killing a 45-year-old Californian with a single punch during a confrontation last month on a downtown sidewalk. James Beach, also known as James Michael Garcia, faces a charge of murder after he was arrested Sunday. Luis Campos of La Puente (Los Angeles County) died May 4 at a Las Vegas hospital. Campos’ brother, Drake Garibay, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that they were standing in line April 30 outside a club when the attacker stopped while walking past on the sidewalk, asked what Campos was looking at, and punched him. 5 Beach warning: Southern California health officials warned swimmers and surfers Monday to stay out of the ocean because of runoff from the weekend’s winter-like storm. The advisory came after the lateseason system brought downpours, hail and snow to the region. Bacteria levels can increase significantly during and after rainstorms as contaminants in the runoff enter the ocean. San Diego County was hardest hit by the unusually wet, chilly weather. More than two inches of rain fell in some areas and nearly 10 inches of snow blanketed peaks in the Cleveland National Forest. 6 Sheriff arrested: A Georgia sheriff was arrested after he exposed himself to a police officer in an Atlanta park and then led the officer on a foot chase, according to a police report. DeKalb County Sheriff Jeffrey Mann, 54, faces charges of indecency and obstruction of an officer. Mann told WSB-TV that the arrest was a misunderstanding and that he would clear his name. An Atlanta officer spotted Mann around 11 p.m. Saturday night in an area “known for sexual acts after dark,” the report says.
