Alonso’s week honored

Yonder Alonso’s first AL Player of the Week honor won’t go to his head. Just like the eight-year veteran’s first two-homer game Saturday night won’t, either.

“It’s well-deserved, certainly, and it’s not just the week,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said. “He’s been doing that the whole year for us, so a nice little feather in his cap. Doesn’t mean he’s going to stop there, but it’s nice to be recognized for that kind of work. Impressive week, impressive numbers.”

The first baseman went 9-for-22 with five home runs, 10 RBIs and five runs scored in six games last week. It’s the first Player of the Week honor for Oakland since Khris Davis won it in September.

Alonso, 30, has nine homers — which ties his career high, set in 2012 as a member of the Padres. He tweaked his swing this season after hitting seven home runs in 482 atbats for the A’s last year.

“He’s doing the same thing daily in his routine as he did in spring training,” said Melvin. “Whether he takes an 0-for-4 — which doesn’t happen often — you can get off that, but he hasn’t, and it’s really paid dividends for him.” Back soon? Catcher Josh Phegley hit two home runs in an extended spring training game in Mesa, Ariz. He is eligible to come off the concussion list Thursday. Fantasy alert: If you drafted Rajai Davis in your fantasy league to get some steals, you might be in trouble. The A’s center fielder has one in 21 games. He sat out Monday night’s game, with Jaff Decker getting the start in center and Matt Joyce — hitting .185 after going 0-for-5 Monday — in the leadoff spot.

Davis missed eight games with a strained left hamstring last month.

“We’ll probably be proactive in giving (Davis) days off,” Melvin said. “His legs are such a big part of his game.”
