Romo fails to qualify for U.S. Open golf

-

Recently retired Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo fell short in his bid to play in the U.S. Open, shooting a 3-over-par 75 at a local qualifier in Aledo, Texas.

Staging what amounted to a fourth-quarter rally, the fourtime Pro Bowler blasted a 386yard drive on the 611-yard par-5 14th hole, then hit a majestic 6-iron from 225 yards out, setting up an eagle that briefly propelled him to 1-over.

A triple-bogey on the next hole, combined with four threeputts, ruined the 37-year-old’s chances of advancing to the sectional stage of qualifying.

Romo would have had to shoot 69 to get into a playoff for one of the last two spots.

This was the third time Romo has attempted to qualify for the U.S. Open.

“It was fun to be back out competing,” Romo said. “It’s been a while, really, since I felt the feeling of the competitive aspect in the golf world.” Tennis: Eugenie Bouchard let her game to the talking in defeating Maria Sharapova 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 in a thrilling second-round match at the Madrid Open.

Bouchard, one of the most outspoken players against Sharapova’s return following a doping ban, jumped up and down after converting her second match point.

Top-seeded Angelique Kerber defeated Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 to advance to the third round and regain the world No. 1 ranking. Hockey: Favorites Russia and Canada remained unbeaten at the hockey world championship after convincing wins over Germany and Belarus in Cologne, Germany. Water polo: Stanford alum Melissa Seidemann was named MVP and the United States won silver at the recently concluded FINA Women’s Intercontinental Tournament in Davis. Jurisprudence: New York Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson has been charged with resisting arrest and obstruction of justice after sparring with officials who asked him to leave a Miami music festival.
