Benchmark’s female partner

-

Benchmark, the venture capital firm behind companies from eBay to Uber, has hired Pinterest veteran Sarah Tavel as its first female general partner.

Tavel, who joins Benchmark from rival Greylock Partners, “impressed us with the speed and quality of her thinking,” wrote Benchmark partner Bill Gurley in a blog post Tuesday.

Her appointment highlights efforts to increase diversity in the sector, where data show that women made up 6 percent of senior investment teams at top venture firms in 2016, up from 5 percent in 2010. The dearth of female leadership in the technology industry has been underscored by allegations of sexism.

Tavel was Greylock’s only female investing partner. So while the move improves diversity at Benchmark, it does little to change things in the sector since Tavel came from a competitor.
