James Matthew “Jim” Riley, 76, passed away peacefully in the morning hours of May 8, 2017, in San Mateo, California where he had resided for the past 47 years. Jim fought a valiant battle following a recent diagnosis of brain cancer.

Born in San Francisco to Matthew & Mildred Riley on February 6, 1941. Jim attended Archbishop Riordan High School and later went on to the University of San Francisco where he met and later married his lifelong love of nearly 55 years, Patricia “Pat” (Kneip) Riley. Jim and Pat raised three beloved daughters: Anne, Suzi & Carole Riley. Jim worked for the US Postal Service for 30+ years and retired as the Postmaster of San Bruno Station.

Jim was extremely proud of being a California native and was a 45-year member of the Native Sons of the Golden West. He was a Past Grand President and also served as the Grand Secretary for the past 16 years. Jim was an avid traveler, having visited all seven continents and numerous countries around the world in addition to many marvelous California sites. Jim greatly enjoyed planning, preparing and taking his family on trips and cruises. A lifelong Bay Area sports fan, Jim loved the Giants, 49ers and Warriors; attending many World Series games and Super Bowls over the years.

Jim is survived by his loving wife Pat; daughters: Anne Riley, Suzi Riley and adopted daughter Monica Kraft. He was preceded in death by his adored daughter Carole Riley. The Riley family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude and appreciati­on for the many well wishes and support Jim received from friends and family during his final days.

Visitation Service begins at 5pm; Rosary Service will be held 7pm followed by the Native Sons of the Golden West Funeral Ceremony on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at Sneider & Sullivan & O’Connell’s Funeral Home, 977 S. El Camino Real, San Mateo, CA. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11am on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at St. Bartholome­w Catholic Church, 300 Alameda de las Pulgas, San Mateo, CA. Interment to follow at Holy Cross, 1500 Mission Rd., Colma, CA.

Memorial donations may be made to the Native Sons of the Golden West Charitable Foundation.
