NEWS OF THE DAY
From Across the Nation
_1 Fuel spill: Officials working to clean up 94,000 gallons of jet fuel that spilled at an air station in Virginia Beach, Va., are urging residents to avoid recreational activities such as fishing in the area until their work is done. The Navy said crews worked over the weekend to remove fuel from affected areas. The cause of the spill at Naval Air Station Oceana on Thursday is being investigated.
_2 Agents threatened: IRS officials facing a Tea Party lawsuit say their lives will be in danger if they testify publicly. A federal lawsuit in Cincinnati is one of several filed against the IRS over its handling of applications for tax-exempt status from conservative groups. Lois Lerner and Holly Paz said in court filings that they received death threats and have been harassed after the allegations of anticonservative bias surfaced in 2013. Their attorneys say evidence filed under seal shows making their testimony public would put them in “serious jeopardy.” A judge will hear arguments on the issue Friday.
_3 Deadly pursuit: Two stolen-car suspects in Los Angeles died when their vehicle struck a tree and burst into flames during a high-speed chase along Hollywood Boulevard, police said. The car weaved erratically in and out of traffic before the crash early Sunday not far from a nightclub where revelers were gathered outside. No pedestrians or motorists were hurt. Coroner’s officials are attempting to identify the two people in the car.
4_ Young graduate: A 14-year-old physics major has become the youngest person ever to graduate from Texas Christian University. Carson Huey-You was among more than 2,000 students receiving degrees Saturday at the Fort Worth school founded in 1873. He started at TCU in 2013 when he was 11. The self-described “normal dude” wants to pursue graduate studies in quantum mechanics.
_5 Burrito recall: More than 252,000 pounds of frozen burritos have been recalled because of possible listeria contamination. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Green Chile Food Co. is recalling the burritos after a routine sampling revealed a problem. The Las Cruces, N.M., company made the ready-to-eat foods between March 8 and May 10, and the products have the establishment number listed as EST. 21740. The burritos were sent to sellers in California, Illinois, Oregon and South Dakota. _6 Talented speller: “Dipsomaniac” was the winning word for a 12-year-old girl from Clovis (Fresno County) who won the state spelling bee for the third year in a row. Ananya Vinay, who attends Fugman Elementary in Clovis, said she’s no longer as nervous onstage as she used to be because she’s improved so much over the years. Vinay clinched the victory Saturday at the competition in Stockton. She says she’s looking forward to the Scripps National Spelling Bee near Washington, D.C., this year.
