Jeter’s No. 2 is retired by Yankees
Former shortstop Derek Jeter’s No. 2 has been retired by the Yankees, who on Sunday dedicated a plaque in his honor that will be placed in Monument Park behind center field at Yankee Stadium.
Jeter captained the Yankees during much of a 20-year career that ended in 2014 and included five World Series titles and a New York-record 3,465 hits.
He says “there isn’t a person or player I would trade places with that’s playing now or ever.”
He is the 22nd player to have his number retired by New York, by far the most among major-league teams, and he was the last to wear a single-digit number. Chapman to DL: Unable to pitch through pain in his shoulder that had bothered him for weeks, Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman went on the disabled list and likely will miss at least a month.
Chapman had a MRI exam Saturday, a day after getting just two outs and giving up a run in the ninth inning of a 5-1 loss to Houston. New York said Chapman has rotator-cuff inflammation in his left shoulder. Dellin Betances will close in Chapman’s absence. Briefly: Angels third baseman Yunel Escobar is expected to be sidelined for at least two weeks because of a strained hamstring, the team said. ... The Diamondbacks placed catcher Chris Iannetta on the seven-day concussion disabled list. Iannetta was hit in the face by a Johnny Barbato pitch in the seventh inning of Friday night’s game against Pittsburgh. Iannetta suffered a split top lip, cracked teeth and a broken nose. The Diamondbacks recalled reliever Silvino Bracho from Triple-A Reno . ... Cleveland placed outfielder Brandon Guyer on the 10-day DL with a sprained left wrist . ... The Mariners announced that former Giants pitcher Jean Machi has cleared waivers and was sent to Triple-A Tacoma . ... Reliever Neil Ramirez, claimed on waivers from the Giants on May 4, has rejected the Blue Jays’ demotion to Triple-A Buffalo and elected free agency.
