Stanford wins NCAA women’s water-polo title

Maggie Steffens completed a hat trick by scoring the game-winner with nine seconds left and No. 2 Stanford won the program's sixth NCAA women’s water-polo championsh­ip with an 8-7 victory over No. 1 UCLA on Sunday in Indianapol­is.

The Cardinal have won five of the past seven titles and appeared in every NCAA final since 2010.

Jamie Neushul scored two goals, and Madison Berggren, Shannon Cleary and Jordan Raney also scored. Goalie Gabby Stone had 10 saves.

The national title was also the 113th NCAA team championsh­ip overall for Stanford, tying UCLA for most all time. It is the fourth NCAA title this academic year for the Cardinal, who also won in men’s soccer, women’s volleyball and women’s swimming and diving, most in a single year since 2001-02. Stanford has won at least one team title for 41 consecutiv­e academic years, an NCAA record.

Baseball: Left-hander Andrew Summervill­e was one out short of a complete game, and Brandon Wulff ’s RBI single in the sixth inning gave No. 10 Stanford the lead for good in an 8-5 win at Cal.

Summervill­e did not allow a run after the fourth inning as Stanford (33-13, 15-8 Pac-12) overcame deficits of 3-0 and 5-3 to win for the 14th time in 15 games.

Preston Grand Pre led the Bears (21-26, 12-14) with three RBIs.

Joey Fiske’s RBI single in the 15th inning lifted St. Mary’s (33-18, 15-9 WCC) to a 5-4 victory at Pepperdine (20-29, 8-16). The Gaels scored three times in the ninth to send the game to extras.

NCAA tennis: Olivia Hauger beat Jessica Golovin 6-3, 6-1 to clinch the host Cal women’s 4-0 win over LSU to advance to Friday’s round of 16 in Athens, Ga.

Stanford’s Caroline Lampl moved to 7-0 all time in NCAAs with a 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-2 win over Donika Bashota as the host Cardinal beat TCU 4-2 to also advance to the round of 16.

Rowing: At Gold River (Sacramento County), Washington swept the men’s and women’s Pac-12 titles for the first time since 1997. Cal’s men and women both placed second. Stanford’s men finished fourth and the women finished third.

Softball: Florida is the top overall seed in the NCAA postseason, which begins Thursday. Cal (30-22) opens Friday against Notre Dame (32-21) in the Auburn (Ala.) Regional, and San Jose State (36-17) faces Cal State Fullerton (33-21), also on Friday, in the Los Angeles Regional. The SEC had 13 teams selected; the Pac-12 had eight. The Women’s College World Series is set for June 1-7 in Oklahoma City.
