Steve Kerr: Ailing head coach, who underwent a spinal cord leak procedure this month, will travel to San Antonio.
Steve Kerr will join the Warriors on their upcoming trip to San Antonio, though the ailing head coach isn’t necessarily expected to coach in Games 3 and 4 of the Western Conference finals.
The news, which general manager Bob Myers relayed during an interview Wednesday afternoon with 95.7 the Game, is the latest sign of Kerr’s progress. After missing Games 3 and 4 of the conference semifinals against Utah to undergo a spinal cord leak procedure on his back at Duke University, Kerr attended practices, team meetings and Games 1 and 2 against the Spurs.
By being with the Warriors in San Antonio, Kerr can more easily voice his opinions to players and coaches. But as of Wednesday, with the team having an off day before returning to practice to prepare for Saturday’s Game 3, there is still no timetable for Kerr’s return to the bench.
In Kerr’s absence, acting head coach Mike Brown has guided the Warriors to eight straight wins. Golden State is 10-0 in the playoffs, one win shy of the NBA record for the best postseason start. Juan Vasquez filed the suit Tuesday, hours before Leonard sat out all of Game 2 after reinjuring his ankle when he stepped on Pachulia’s foot in the second half of Game 1.
“All we are asking from the court is that this type of behavior, that can and does cause serious injury to our team and those that love it, not be allowed in San Antonio,” said Alfonso Kennard Jr., lead attorney for the plaintiffs.
The suit claims Pachulia, acting “without excuse or justification, intentionally and maliciously invaded the landing zone of an opposing athlete, Kawhi Leonard.”
Pachulia’s action, the complaint reads, “devastated the quality of the Spurs’ chances of being competitive and having additional games in their home arena, both in the Western Conference Finals and also potentially in the NBA Finals” and also negatively affected “the value of the tickets purchased by plaintiff subsequent to their purchase.”
