Cosby trial: A crucial phase of comedian Bill Cosby’s sex assault trial starts Monday when lawyers gather in Pittsburgh to pick the jury that will weigh his case. The jury must decide whether the 79-yearold actor drugged and molested a Temple University women’s basketball team manager at his home near Philadelphia in 2004. Cosby calls the encounter with accuser Andrea Constand consensual. The felony charge carries a potential 10-year prison term.

Plagiarism denial: Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, who said he’s been appointed an assistant secretary in the Department of Homeland Security, has denied he plagiarized content in his master’s thesis on homeland security. The denial follows a CNN report Saturday saying Clarke, a strong supporter of President Trump, failed to attribute sources at least 47 times in his 2013 thesis. The Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey removed his thesis from its website Saturday. The Department of Homeless Security hasn’t confirmed Clarke’s appointment, which the sheriff announced Wednesday.

Embassy violence: America’s top diplomat said the Trump administration has expressed its “dismay” to the Turkish government about a violent confrontation between Turkish security officials and protesters outside Turkey’s embassy in Washington. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Turkey’s ambassador met with State Department officials and that it was made clear that the U.S. believes that Tuesday’s clash was “simply unacceptable. Tillerson told “Fox News Sunday” that an investigation is under way, and he’ll let that finish before making any decision about a more formal response.

Philadelphia gunfire: Authorities say gunfire that broke out on a north Philadelphia block where people were listening to music sent nine people to the hospital, two in critical condition. Police said at least 27 shots were fired shortly after 10:30 p.m. Saturday near what’s called the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood. Several people who were injured told investigators they were listening to music when two unknown males opened fire into the crowd from across the street. Media outlets reported that as many as 30 people were on the sidewalk dancing at the time.

Deportation stay: A mother of two children who sought sanctuary at a Quaker meeting house in Denver to avoid U.S. immigration authorities has been granted a temporary stay from deportation. Ingrid Encalada Latorre, a 33-year-old native of Peru, and her attorney announced that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials agreed not to pursue deportation through Aug. 7. Through a translator, Latorre said she looked forward to going home with her children, 8 and 17 months, who were both born in the U.S. Her attorney said the reprieve allows Latorre to continue her appeal of a 2010 case in which she pleaded guilty to possessing falsified or stolen identification papers that she used to get work.
