Zverev, 20, beats Djokovic in final

Alexander Zverev signaled his anticipate­d arrival among the tennis elite by defeating Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3 to win the Italian Open in Rome.

Zverev, 20, became the youngest player to win a Masters 1000 event since Djokovic won in Miami a decade ago at 19.

The title will move Zverev up to a career-high No. 10 in the rankings Monday and place him among the contenders for the French Open.

In the women’s final, Elina Svitolina surged to No. 1 in the season-long rankings race by beating Simona Halep 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. It was a tour-best fourth title this year for Svitolina. WNBA: Stefanie Dolson tied her career high with 23 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked five shots and the Chicago Sky beat the host Atlanta Dream 75-71 . ... Jewell Loyd scored 26 points in the host Seattle Storm’s 81-71 victory over the Washington Mystics. ... Track and field: Justin Gatlin clocked 10.28 seconds to win the 100 meters at a Golden Grand Prix event in Kawasaki, Japan. Recovering: Former Alabama football coach Gene Stallings told news outlets from his Paris, Texas, home that he’s recovering from a stroke suffered Thursday in in Montgomery, Ala. Stallings coached the Crimson Tide from 1990 through ’96 and won a national championsh­ip in 1992.
