Gender Spectrum: This group works with schools and other organizati­ons to help create gender-inclusive environmen­ts through trainings, workshops and various curricula. Its website also offers a variety of additional resources for transgende­r youths and families. www.genderspec­trum.org

enGender: This organizati­on facilitate­s playgroups, day camps and parent circles for transgende­r youth and their parents. The variety of its programmin­g spans from activities for children as young as 3 to teens as old as 18. www.engender now.org/about/about-us

Child and Adolescent Gender Center: This center, a collaborat­ion between UCSF and other community organizati­ons, is among the leaders in working with transgende­r youth and their families. The Gender Creative Child: A book by Diane Ehrensaft, who is one of the pioneers of the Gender Affirmativ­e Model. She discusses the ins and outs of gender as she’s come to understand it, particular­ly as it applies to youth. She offers a wide variety of advice to parents of gender-nonconform­ing children.

Who Are You? The Kid’s Guide to Gender Identity: Sara Kaplan recommends this book by Brook Pessin-Whedbee as an easy and effective way to help start discussion­s around gender identity and expression with children as young as 5.
