Gender Spectrum: This group works with schools and other organizations to help create gender-inclusive environments through trainings, workshops and various curricula. Its website also offers a variety of additional resources for transgender youths and families. www.genderspectrum.org
enGender: This organization facilitates playgroups, day camps and parent circles for transgender youth and their parents. The variety of its programming spans from activities for children as young as 3 to teens as old as 18. www.engender now.org/about/about-us
Child and Adolescent Gender Center: This center, a collaboration between UCSF and other community organizations, is among the leaders in working with transgender youth and their families. BOOKS
The Gender Creative Child: A book by Diane Ehrensaft, who is one of the pioneers of the Gender Affirmative Model. She discusses the ins and outs of gender as she’s come to understand it, particularly as it applies to youth. She offers a wide variety of advice to parents of gender-nonconforming children.
Who Are You? The Kid’s Guide to Gender Identity: Sara Kaplan recommends this book by Brook Pessin-Whedbee as an easy and effective way to help start discussions around gender identity and expression with children as young as 5.
