Warriors have chance to be golden for years

- An edited transcript of an interview with former Warrior and basketball Hall of Famer Rick Barry:

Q: What’s going to derail (this Warriors team)? They already have the best regular-season record, best postseason record. I don’t see any team on the horizon in the league that’s going to really run with them. What kind of run do you think they can go on here? A: Well I think five, six years if they all stay together, stay healthy. Klay (Thompson) has already said that he’d rather be on a championship team than to go someplace else and not have a chance to win. Money shouldn’t even be an object. These guys have a chance to be a part of something incredibly special in the history of professional basketball, and why not do it in a great city? They’re getting a new arena, incredible fans, so I’m hoping they do that, because they’re really fun to watch. There’s no team right now that is on the same level as they are. The other teams are going to have to do something to get better, Cleveland found that out. And give Cleveland credit because they battled their butt off. They looked like they were going to get blown out, they fought back. Q: Will the Warriors go to the White House? Should they in your opinion?

A: Keep politics out of sports, please. Politics sucks, OK? ... We weren’t invited to the White House when we won in ’75, so what’s the big deal? Q: Put yourself in (LeBron James’) position right now. He’s got one more year on his deal. He obviously wants to add more rings to his trophy case. What’s the best way to go about doing that? What’s your read on his best route to another ring as long as Golden State is in the way? A: I think they have to add additional talent to their team that’s going to be more consistent for them. They’re very inconsistent. He and Kyrie (Irving) didn’t get the kind of help they needed. They have to get more players that play at a higher level so that LeBron and Kyrie don’t have to do as much as they’re required to do in order to win.

I would like to say I’m so happy and proud of Kevin Durant after all the garbage he’s been through with people on his case because he left and everything. This guy did what any athlete would do and any person would do if you were in a profession and had a chance to go to another company that you had a chance to go ahead and excel and be better at what you’re doing and really achieve greatness. Why would you not do that? He did it, and I’m happy for him. And not only did he get his championship, he was the MVP and justifiably so. He’s a great person, get off his case.
