Quakes, K.C. play to scoreless draw

San Jose’s David Bingham made three saves, as did Sporting Kansas City counterpar­t Tim Melia in his MLS-leading ninth shutout of the season as the teams played to a 0-0 draw at Avaya Stadium on Saturday night.

Melia didn’t face a shot in the first half, when San Jose was outshot 10-0.

Bingham’s saves included a diving stop of Jimmy Medranda’s shot in the 70th minute. The San Jose keeper took sole possession of second with six shutouts this season.

Sporting KC (7-4-6) had a handful of chances, including a free kick by Benny Feilhaber that bounced off the post in the opening minutes.

San Jose (5-6-5) is winless in its past three matches. SF Deltas 1, FC Edmonton 0: Devon Sandoval scored on a penalty kick in the 40th minute, and the Deltas (5-2-5) moved into second place in the NASL with a win at Kezar Stadium. The Deltas extended their unbeaten streak in league games to four. Confederat­ions Cup: Russia marched on toward hosting the 2018 World Cup as the rehearsal tournament kicked off in the new $750 million stadium in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s native St. Petersburg.

Putin arrived by helicopter barely 20 minutes before kickoff, and made a speech to open the tournament.

Russia’s players duly delivered a victory their head of state had all but demanded by beating New Zealand 2-0. They forced an own goal from New Zealand defender Michael Boxall in the 31st minute, and forward Fyodor Smolov added a second in the 69th.
