Orioles’ Davis out past All-Star break

-

Sidelined with a right oblique strain, Chris Davis can’t seem to get comfortable lying down or sitting in a chair. So, it will probably be after the All-Star break before the Baltimore Orioles first baseman is ready to swing a bat in a big league game again.

“I think three weeks would be real ambitious,” manager Buck Showalter said. “I’d sign up for that right now.”

Davis, who has hit 140 home runs since the start of the 2013 season, went on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday.

Minnesota signed shortstop Royce Lewis, 18, giving the first overall pick in the draft a $6,725,000 bonus that’s the most for a high school player since the new compensation system began five years ago.

Texas placed right-handed starter Andrew Cashner on the 10-day DL with a strained left oblique, purchased the contract of right-hander Ernesto Frieri from Triple-A Round Rock and designated first baseman-outfielder Peter O’Brien for assignment. Golf: Lexi Thompson shot a 64 on the Blythefield layout, reduced to a par of 69 because of flooding, giving her a one-stroke lead at 15-under 196 at the Meijer LPGA Classic in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Brooke Henderson, the firstand second-round leader, shot 67 to drop into a tie for second with Lee-Anne Pace (61), Sung Hyun Park (62) and Jenny Shin (63). NFL: After fearing that rookie defensive end Myles Garrett, the top overall pick in the draft, might be out for a significant period, the Cleveland Browns said he has a sprained foot and should be ready for training camp next month. WNBA: Jasmine Thomas and Alyssa Thomas each scored 20 points for the visiting Connecticut Sun (5-5), who dealt the Minnesota Lynx (9-1) their first loss of the season, 98-93.
