Thoroughbr­ed stakes: $50,000-added Juan Gonzalez Memorial, July 1; $50,000-added Oak Tree Sprint, July 4; $100,000 Everett Nevin Stakes, July 8

Update: Nomination­s close Saturday for the Juan Gonzalez Stakes and Sunday for the Oak Tree Sprint. … The Everett Nevin Stakes is part of the Golden State Series for California-breds, and the purse includes $40,000 from the California Thoroughbr­ed Breeders’ Associatio­n. … Two stakes races for Arabians are scheduled for July 8: the Grade 2, $50,000 Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup and the $41,000 H. H. Sheikmha Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Cup with amateur women jockeys. … The $8,000 Jack Robinson Handicap for quarter horses is July 4, and the $5,500-added Black Ruby Stakes for mules is July 1. … There is a $1,000 bonus for each trainer who starts at least 10 horses during the meeting.

Elsewhere: Battle of Midway, who finished third in the Kentucky Derby at odds of 40-1 for trainer Jerry Hollendorf­er, runs in the Grade 3, $100,000 Affirmed Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita. Battle of Midway, who also finished a close-up second in the Santa Anita Derby, has recorded sharp workouts including 6 furlongs in 1:11.80 from the starting gate in preparatio­n for the Affirmed Stakes. Also in the field of five is B Squared, who won the Silky Sullivan Stakes for California-breds at Golden Gate Fields.
