Quakes get 1st win under new coach

Danny Hoesen scored the decisive goal in the 84th minute as the host Earthquake­s, playing their first match for new coach Chris Leitch, advanced to the quarterfin­als of the U.S. Open Cup with a 2-1 win over the Seattle Sounders on Wednesday night.

The Quakes, who had battled to a 1-1 draw with Seattle during a Major League Soccer match in San Jose on April 8, took a 1-0 lead Wednesday when Shea Salinas scored in the sixth minute. And despite playing one man down after Francisco Narbon received a red card in the 35th minute, the Sounders’ Aaron Kovar evened the match with a goal in the 48th minute.

The Quakes, however, re- sponded with the winner as Hoesen took a pass from Jackson Yueill, split three defenders, and fired a shot from close range past goalie Tyler Miller

The Quakes advance to a quarterfin­als match in July against the Los Angeles Galaxy, who defeated Sacramento Republic 2-0.

Los Angeles and the Quakes will meet in an MLS match at Avaya Stadium in San Jose on Saturday. U.S. Open Cup highlights: Ike Opara and Gerso Fernandes scored as Sporting KC defeated host Houston 2-0 . ... In other matches, the New England Revolution beat visiting D.C. United 2-1, Miami FC edged visiting Atlanta 3-2, and the host New York Red Bulls beat Philadelph­ia 5-3 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw.

Confederat­ions Cup: Claudio Bravo made three penalty saves as as Chile defeated Portugal 3-0 in a penalty shootout after a scoreless draw through extra time in Kazan, Russia, to reach Sunday’s final.

Bravo stopped penalties by Ricardo Quaresma, Joao Moutinho and Nani. Chile’s Arturo Vidal, Charles Aranguiz and Alexis Sanchez all scored.
