The Beguiled: This year, Sofia Coppola became only the second woman to win the best director honor at the Cannes Film Festival for her work on the remake of the 1971 film starring Clint Eastwood about an injured Civil War Union soldier being tended to by women at a Southern boarding school. In this version, Colin Farrell plays the Eastwood role with Nicole Kidman as the proprietor, Kirsten Dunst as the teacher and Elle Fanning as one of the students.

The Big Sick: Silicon Valley’s Kumail Nanjiani stars as himself in this rom-com that he co-wrote with his wife, Emily Gordon. Kumail is worried how his Pakistani parents will feel about his relationship, but when his love interest (Zoe Kazan) falls into a coma, he develops a relationship with her parents (Ray Romano and Holly Hunter).

Despicable Me 3: The Minions and the cranky pseudo-villain (voiced by Steve Carell) return to stop the latest bad guy, an ’80s child star named Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker), from taking over the world.
