Djokovic, Pliskova ready for Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic gave his Wimbledon hopes a boost by winning the Eastbourne Internatio­nal final in England against Gael Monfils in straight sets Saturday.

Djokovic won 6-3, 6-4 for his first title since January in Qatar.

“Hopefully, I’ll be able to take the performanc­e here and a good level of confidence into Wimbledon,” Djokovic said.

In the women’s final, Karolina Pliskova, a Wimbledon semifinali­st last year, beat 2009 champion Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-4 for her third title of the year.

Pliskova lost in the final last year.

“I’m really happy I got the trophy this time,” she said. “I feel quite OK on grass . ... The serve is definitely my biggest weapon and, if it’s working, then it’s real trouble for the opponent.”

It was also mission accomplish­ed for Djokovic. After losing in the French Open quarterfin­als, he decided to play a grass event before Wimbledon for the first time in seven years, and received a wild card for his first trip to Eastbourne.

He broke Monfils to start and finish the first set. In the second, he saved three break points, and broke Monfils to cap the final and improve to 14-0 against the Frenchman on the tour. WNBA: Jonquel Jones scored 29 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and Jasmine Thomas added 22 points to lead the visiting Connecticu­t Sun to a 91-85 win over the Indiana Fever . ... Breanna Stewart scored 30 points and the visiting Seattle Storm snapped a threegame losing streak with an 89-69 victory over the Dallas Wings.

Track and field: Olympic champion Elaine Thompson overcame a sluggish start to win the 100 meters at the Paris Diamond League and maintain her unbeaten record this season. The Jamaican runner crossed the finish line in 10.91 seconds at Stade Charlety to hold off Marie-Josee Ta Lou of Ivory Coast (10.96).

In an upset, Olympic 110-meter hurdles champion Omar McLeod of Jamaica lost the Diamond League final to countryman Ronald Levy, who won in a personal best of 13.05.

Olympic champion Ruth Jebet, who broke the women’s 3,000meter steeplecha­se world record last year, fell in the last kilometer and crossed the line in fourth place. Kenya’s Beatrice Chepkoech won in 9:01.69, with countrywom­en Hyvin Kiyeng and Celliphine Chepteek Chespol taking second and third, respective­ly.

With a last lap of 54 seconds, Ethiopia’s Muktar Edris won the men’s 3,000 in 7:32.31.
