Carl was born to Daisy Reeves and Carl Markham Sr. in Austin TX. Carl Sr. died when Carl was 2 years of age. His Mother married Ed Godwin and had two more children, Marilyn Godwin and Derwood Godwin, now deceased.

The family moved from Austin to Richmond CA. After High School, Carl joined the Navy. He served from 1951-1954 and remained on inactive duty until 1959. Carl received the National Defense Service Medal, the China Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.

On completing his service, Carl moved to San Francisco and began a career restoring antique and collectible furniture. Carl remained in his next career, renovating and managing residential property until his retirement. During those years he lived in San Francisco and Tiburon. After returning from 3 years’ residency in Hong Kong, Carl settled in Sonoma.

Carl loved to travel. He visited almost every continent. He was a talented gardener and cook. He took special delight in growing his own vegetables and preparing meals from recipes sourced from the many places he had visited.

Carl is survived by his niece Cynthia Godwin Jacobsen; nephew Daniel Godwin, sister-in-law Bonnie Godwin, cousins Robert Reeves, Georgia Pittman and devoted friend of 44 years, Peter Gordon. Carl will be remembered for his big smile, big heart, kindness to all and cheerful outlook.

We wish to thank all of the staff at Green Acres Manor Kenwood for their loving care and support. Special thanks also to St. Joseph Health Memorial Hospice, Santa Rosa.

Services for Carl will take place on Monday July 3rd at 1pm at Sunset View Cemetery, Colusa and Fairmount Avenues, El Cerrito CA.
