Gene Spake died age 82, surrounded by family. Born in Charlotte, N.C., he came to S.F. (‘57) and settled in the hills of Mill Valley (‘69). He was known by many for his intellect and convictions, his mental clarity and kind heart. Active in the Tam Valley community, he served on the TCSD board for over a decade. Gene never hesitated to strike up meaningful conversation, inviting us to think critically and play an active role. He was learned and always learning, spoke the difficult truths while staying hopeful and keeping a wonderful sense of humor. Gene earned his MSW from SFSU, worked for the City of SF, a social worker in child welfare, supporting families and healthy parent-child relationships (also in Humboldt Co, Hupa Tribe). He engaged the world with purpose and compassion, his efforts stemming from a profound love of life and the desire to serve humanity and all of earth’s living things. Gene was devoted to his wife Ann Spake, married 58 yrs, and dearly loved his family. He is survived by his children Zhenya, Deborah and Colin Spake, his grandchildren Jeremy, Brennan, Coralanne, Sequoia and Oceana, his sisters Joan Heian and Deanna Spake. Gene led a wonderful life.
