October surfeit
“Overlord,” due next year, is a horror movie set during the Allied invasion of Normandy. It’s from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot company, which has hatched two “Cloverfield” movies so far under clouds of mystery, with a third (“The God Particle”) due this October, fueling speculation “Overlord” may be another in the alien-invasion series. Whatever it is, its release date drops it into a very busy time.
The date: Oct. 26, 2018. What else is going on during that month? (Openings subject to change.)
Oct. 5, 2018, will see the Tom Hardy “Spider-Man”-related “Venom” movie. Oct. 12, Damien Chazelle and Ryan Gosling reunite for a Neil Armstrong biopic, “First Man.”
Oct. 19 will be yet another “Halloween” — this one from the “Pineapple Express” team of David Gordon Green and co-written by Green and Danny McBride. It’s reportedly a sequel to “Halloween II” and McBride has said it will be “straight-up horror.”
Also Oct. 19 will be “Jungle Book.” This is not the sequel to Disney’s live-action/CGI “The Jungle Book,” which is in the works; this is a motion-capture film directed by the motion-capture virtuoso Andy Serkis, with an all-star cast.
Oct. 19 also sees the next X-Men movie, “Dark Phoenix,” rise from the fire — retelling the motley mutants’ signature story. And there’s Fede Alvarez’ “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” sequel, “The Girl in the Spider’s Web.”
By the way, Claire Foy (“The Crown”) has been reported as the front-runner for leading roles in both “First Man” and “Spider’s Web” — the latter as the new Lisbeth Salander.
