Downsize in style
Tips for making the most of small living spaces. Banish the sectional: “People think sectionals are the solution to small spaces,” says Amadi, “but I think they’re actually the wrong choice.” A small sofa flanked by multiple chairs or stools affords a more comfortable arrangement with greater flexibility. Consider sconces: Wall fixtures are the ultimate space-saver. Opt for frosted or Edison bulbs, which create a soft, inviting glow rather than a spotlight effect. Go ahead, cut corners: In an oddly-shaped room, like those dominated by angled fireplaces, homeowners tend to end up with undersized area rugs. But professional rug specialists can trim the corner to fit and re-stitch the edge with the skill of a surgeon. Be smart with color: White walls would accentuate the smallness of this home’s narrow, rather drab bathroom, says Amadi. Instead, a dark, bold paint color—here, Bavarian Forest by Benjamin Moore—lends a dramatic effect. (Righetti, a golf fan, calls it “Masters green.”) Invest in multipurpose pieces: Find furniture that doubles as storage, like platform beds or drawer-equipped coffee tables. Everett and Righetti purchased a storage bench from CB2 for their roof deck, where they stow pillows, throws, and barbecue tools.
